CHAPTER 16

I’D SEEN AND heard some far-fetched things in my life.

In the past year, I’d found out there was an occult organization trying to take over the world. I’d watched as a man transformed into a monster. I’d seen women who could turn into a cloud of shadow, and discovered an ancient city that people thought was a myth.

But this? This was a whole new level of weird.

“So you’re telling me that Atlantis is real,” I said. “That the Golden Dawn found it…and that they’re doing something down there that’s released these monsters?”

Mira nodded. “We’ve been racing to reach the city before the Order for years, but it seems they got their quarry first. And they must have poured a hell of a lot of resources into it, because it’s at the edge of the Mariana Trench. I overheard some of the Order men talking about it when they had me imprisoned.”

“So you have a location?” Ryo asked.

“Yes,” Mira replied. “KOL Group has a sub waiting for us in Guam; we just have to get there without some other ancient trench-dwelling behemoth destroying your little sailboat.”

“Hey, don’t blame the sailboat when you could have told us this whole time that there were ancient trench-dwelling behemoths taking a tour of the Pacific,” Ryo hissed. “That tidbit would have been helpful, don’t you think?”

“I was a little distracted by the decapitated lizard men and the days of torture,” Mira snapped.

“Ladies, let’s take a breather,” I said, raising my hands. The two of them looked at me, their eyes blazing, and for a moment I wondered if I’d said the wrong thing. Ellie didn’t comment, tucked into my side and still shaking from our encounter with the monster. “Mira, what do you know?”

Mira sighed, shaking her head. “Not much, unfortunately,” she said. “Apparently there’s something down there that the Order wants to free…and I can’t imagine it would be good. The thing we just ran into is just the beginning.”

“Just the beginning?” I gaped. “You mean they get bigger?”

“Only if we don’t stop them,” Mira said.

“Stop them,” I repeated. “Not sure if you remember, but I’m an archaeologist, not a…monster-fighting badass. And I’m starting to feel a little out of my depth.”

“That’s why you’re here, Vic,” Mira said. “Because this is an archaeological matter.”

I frowned. “Explain.”

Mira looked up at Ryo, extending her hand. “Ryo, do you still have the files my grandfather sent us before I landed in Manila?”

“Yeah,” Ryo said. “Gimme a second…”

She stood up and headed to a cabinet next to the pilot’s seat, rifling through a chaotic mess of papers. She finally pulled out a packet of documents, walking back over to us.

“Here you go.”

“Thanks.” Mira passed it right over to me and I opened it with an inquisitive glance, sliding the papers out to find a collection of images and text.

“Wait a second…” I said, my eyes widening. “This looks like Luzan.”

The similarities were clear as day; without a doubt, these characters were the same as the written language from the lost city of Luza, a.
